Fancy a curry? Well, to add to the seven C's of Bristol I've found one of the best Indian restaurants for a great curry. Kathmandu restaurant is situated opposite Colston Hall on Colston Street just off the centre, which is perfect if you want to eat before a night out. The restaurant moved there in September 2003 because it was so popular as a take-away shop in its former Easton premises that a new restaurant was built.
The restaurant isn’t easy to find if you don’t know about it. It is hidden among the other buildings and looks deceivingly small from the outside.
There is a modern touch to the interior of the restaurant as well as traditional decoration that you find in many Indian restaurants. There is dim lighting and flowers on all the tables, which gives a romantic feel. However it is also a great place to visit with friends or family as there is a lively and friendly atmosphere.
The staff make you feel very welcome and the service is good, however it is quite slow which may not be so good if you’re in a hurry, but is nice if you are not, as you can take time over each course and relax.
It is probably best to order a starter such as a poppadom to nibble while you wait as it takes about half an hour for the main course to come.
It is, however, well worth the wait as the food is delicious. There is a huge selection to choose from, with a range of very hot dishes if you’re brave, and mild dishes if you don’t fancy breathing fire for the rest of the evening. There is also a very good vegetarian choice.
The food is placed on heated plates in the centre of the table so that you can help yourself to a bit of everything. I chose the vegetable korma (mildly spiced with cream and coconut cream) while my fellow curry tasters chose the vegetable moghlai (mildly spiced with a touch of yoghurt, seasoning, egg, onion and nuts) and the sag paneer (spinach and cottage cheese).
The prices weren’t too high at £5.95 each and the portions were a good size. All three dishes were delicious with a perfect blend of chunky vegetables and tasty sauces which were extremely pleasing to the taste buds.
If you enjoy Indian cuisine and want something a bit different then this is definitely one to try, especially if you want something a bit special but not too expensive. A definite recommendation!
